Heroes’ Vow: Three Kingdoms is a single-player role-playing game set during the chaotic final years of the Han dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period that followed. The player creates or picks a hero and shapes a personal story against a backdrop of rebellion, warlords and shifting loyalties. There are many ways to play. One hero might serve a capable lord as a faithful general and help unite the empire. Another might claim territory and rule as an independent warlord. A third might wander as an unaffiliated officer who commands private soldiers and sways key conflicts from the sidelines. Life outside the battlefield matters just as much. Heroes can swear brotherhood oaths, court a partner, marry and raise children who carry on the family name. The game has more than twenty starting scenarios, from the Yellow Turban uprising to the Battle of Xiling. Its roster includes over 1,300 historical figures, and randomly generated characters appear as the years pass.

The world works on three levels: a strategic campaign map, detailed city screens and close-up local scenes. Large conflicts play out as real-time army battles on more than 100 maps covering open fields, sieges, counties, rivers and mountain passes. Over 30 troop types with their own strengths and counters make formations, siege weapons and officer abilities important. One-on-one duels and verbal debates use turn-based card mechanics. Officers improve through three separate disciplines covering command, martial skill and intellect, and thousands of skills can be combined into builds focused on assault, defense, critical hits, counters or evasion. Rulers handle city economies, research technology, appoint governors and send armies to conquer rivals. Serving officers earn merit through quarterly reviews and can rise to governor or regional viceroy. Free officers run trade caravans, manage estates, hire out their own troops to different factions and form pacts with powerful warlords. More than two million words of story let players revisit famous battles like Chibi, Guandu and Yiling from many sides and change how they end. Overall, the game combines strategy, character building and historical drama in a deep take on the Three Kingdoms era.
