Kernel Hearts is an action RPG built on a roguelike structure, set in a ruined future where ash has smothered most of the world and humanity clings to a single remaining stronghold. Players take the role of operatives in the M.A.H.O.U Unit, a squad of augmented magical soldiers sent into the Tower of Babel, an immense structure whose floors are held by angelic beings. The premise is direct and deliberately blasphemous: climb the tower, tear through the heavenly hierarchy guarding each domain, and ultimately confront the deity presiding over the ruin below. Every expedition is a fresh attempt, and failure simply returns the operative to the last saved memory backup in a laboratory on the edge of the settlement. The tone mixes cyberpunk hardware language with religious imagery, treating divine enemies as systems to be broken and the magical girl transformation as a piece of software running on failing infrastructure.

Combat encourages improvisation: attacks, spells, and movement abilities can be chained together with the temporary powers picked up during a run, so combos form differently each time. Up to four players can fight through the tower together, and every level ends with a demanding boss fight against the guardian of that domain. Rewards carried out of an expedition feed a customization layer built around MAHOU.OS, the operating system each Unit runs on. Chips are unlocked and slotted into a limited 256KB budget, forcing trade-offs between offense, survivability, and utility rather than letting a build hold everything at once. Drawing on the tower’s own power dispels the Heavenly Curse for a short window, clearing nearby enemies with a burst of damage and granting a stronger true form until the effect fades. Between runs, the settlement’s residents can be talked to and given gifts, gradually deepening those relationships. The result is a fast, combo-driven roguelike with enough persistent progression and character writing to reward long play, and it works equally well solo or as a four-player scrap against the heavens.
