This was an era defined by shifting borders, religious conflict, civil war and the slow formation of nations, and that turbulence sits directly in the hands of whoever wears the crown. Play alternates between a turn-based campaign map and enormous real-time battles that can put as many as ten thousand soldiers on screen at once. Provinces are developed and garrisoned, fleets are sent out to secure trade routes and troop crossings, and agents handle the quieter work: emissaries broker alliances and bribes, spies uncover what rivals are planning, and assassins remove obstacles that diplomacy cannot. A dedicated siege system suits a century of stone fortresses, so towers, engines and sapping become as important as open-field manoeuvres. Generals and family members accumulate valour along with a personal mix of vices and virtues that alters how other characters treat them and how steadily their troops perform, which makes the health of the bloodline a strategic concern in its own right. Viking Invasion moves the fighting to an expanded map of the British Isles and western Scandinavia between 793 and 1066, offering either Norse raiders carving out dominance or Anglo-Saxon kingdoms such as Wessex and Mercia resisting them, and it feeds extra factions, units and flaming ammunition back into the grand campaign. Together the two halves make one of the deepest medieval strategy packages ever assembled.
