Shroom and Gloom is a first-person roguelike card game that drops players into a hand-drawn underworld crawling with hostile fungus. The premise is simple to grasp and strange to look at: something called The Gloom has taken root beneath the surface, and the only way forward is to carve a path through room after room of mutated mushroom creatures until the source itself is reached. What sets the game apart from most card-driven dungeon crawlers is that it runs on two separate decks instead of one, splitting the moment-to-moment fighting from everything that happens between fights. The art style leans hard into surreal, sketchy illustration, with drawn characters and animations layered over dozens of three-dimensional rooms, giving the whole run a feverish storybook quality. Hundreds of cards are available across a campaign built for repeat attempts, and each descent is meant to be read as a fresh tangle of encounters, upgrades and increasingly absurd weapons pulled from a very large pool.

The two decks serve distinct purposes. The combat deck handles battles directly, covering attacks, defenses and the tools needed to outlast waves of fungal enemies, while the exploration deck governs movement through the dungeon, card modification, and the unlocking of new gear and abilities. Progression centers on growth: humble starter cards can be fed and expanded until they become overwhelming finishers, and rarer cards can be twisted into outright broken super-weapons, with no fixed ceiling on how far the scaling goes. That open-ended upgrading is what fuels the long combo chains the game is built around. Healing works through an unusual loop as well, favoring consumption over defense. Rather than simply blocking incoming hits, players can season, skewer and roast enemies before devouring them to recover lost health, and roasted foes can be tossed into a pot to brew soups that meaningfully alter a run. The result is a deckbuilder with a distinct personality, blending tactical card play, endless upgrade experimentation and a grim sense of humor into a dungeon crawl that rewards creative, greedy building.
