About The Game
Life is Strange: Before the Storm returns with remastered visuals across characters & environments. Set three years before ‘Life is Strange’, you play as sixteen-year old Chloe Price who forms an unlikely friendship with Rachel Amber, a beautiful and popular girl destined for success. When Rachel learns a secret about her family that threatens to destroy her world, it is her newfound friendship with Chloe that gives her the strength to carry on. No longer alone the girls must confront each other’s demons and together, find a way to overcome them. For months, I was very skeptical of the remaster. I did so many A/B comparisons of pictures and videos. I initially deemed these remastered changes to be silly, unnecessary, too subtle, and not big enough of a deal to warrant a remaster. I was worried that I’d play it, hate it, and would feel as though I wasted my money. I am happy to say that it is not the case here. I’ve had Youtube open with a full no commentary gameplay video of the original version up, and after I finish playing a scene in the remastered version, I’ll quickly tab out while it’s still fresh on my mind and will re-watch the same scene in the original gameplay.
Faces, facial expressions, textures, eyes, skin, etc. all seem much more organic and fleshed out. I’ve been playing for a few hours now and I’m enjoying it very much. Yes, the differences are subtle, but in my opinion they’re much less subtle than I originally believed them to be based off of my A/B comparisons of promo photos and short promo videos. The facial structure in the faces has been very much improved in the remaster. Eyes also look like they have much more depth and “soul” to them, if you will. Rachel Amber’s eyes especially look more vibrant and less hollow. The lip movements as the characters speak also is very fluid and more organic. If you play this, though, it’s very easy to forget what the original non-remastered graphics looked like. Likewise, I’m sure that if I played the original Before the Storm again, I’d quickly get immersed in its graphics and wouldn’t care all that much that it wasn’t remastered. However, my method of playing a scene in the remastered version, tabbing out, and then playing the same scene on Youtube in a gameplay video has really opened my eyes to how many subtle and nuanced changes they have made. Dare I say, the non-remastered version now looks clunky and unpolished to me after doing direct A/B comparisons. However, I would have been happy with the original if this remaster didn’t exist.
I have run into some small lighting glitches here and there, which I’m sure will be patched at some point, because others have brought them to the devs attention. I am playing on day one of release so I’m never too put off by very early release day glitches and bugs. Overall, it has mostly been smooth sailing. As someone who worried that it was just a cash grab or wasn’t going to be good enough of a remaster, I am happy to say that they preserved the heart and soul of the LiS art style but they refined facial structures, textures, eyes, hair textures (holy cow, the hair textures are so much better!), and overall it looks much more fluid, cohesive, and refined with suble and nuanced improvements. That being said, the law of diminishing returns is real, and it’s not a profound night and day difference.
