This charming tale unfolds through the use of animation storyboarded and created by the legendary Studio Ghibli and music composed by the renowned Joe Hisaishi. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch™ combines beautiful animated visuals, masterful storytelling, and a sweeping score to create an epic role-playing adventure like no other. The story follows Oliver, a young boy from a quaint town who embarks on a journey in a parallel fantasy world in an effort to revive his recently deceased mother. To do this, he has to take down an evil dark wizard that has been terrorizing the people; little does Oliver know, behind the scenes, the dark wizard’s strings are being pulled by an even bigger, evil-er witch queen. Oliver discovers and uses a wide array of magical spells throughout the game, from talking to animals and spirits, levitation, and firestarting, to unusual ones like making brooms come to life or conjuring food out of thin air. However, his chief ability is the power to fix emotions, and a major game mechanic is borrowing bits of positive emotions from folks with lots of a certain quality (like enthusiasm or confidence) in order to restore unnatural imbalances in others. It’s a fine story with a few twists and turns, many of which I saw coming and a few I didn’t.
I was expecting a turn-based game, but Ni No Kuni is not that. It uses an ATB-like system, but it’s VERY active, where you control one character and the others are controlled (poorly) by an AI. I would recommend checking out some videos of the battle system before buying if you are on the fence to see if it’s the kind of thing you would like or not. The general idea is that your characters can fight as themselves, or they can call upon a familiar to fight in their place, swapping back and forth fluidly, with all sharing one HP and MP pool. The familiar system is extremely pokemon-esque; practically any enemy you fight in battle can be recruited to your team, where it will learn abilities over time and can be transformed (evolved) into more powerful versions of itself. There are good things in the game besides the art and music, like the brilliant illustrated alchemist’s compendium that functions as your map/crafting guide/bestiary and the quest rewards system where completing quests fills out punchcards that can be redeemed for various passive rewards.
