Say howdy to West of Loathing — a single-player slapstick comedy adventure role-playing game set in the wild west of the Kingdom of Loathing universe. Traverse snake-infested gulches, punch skeletons wearing cowboy hats, grapple with demon cows, and investigate a wide variety of disgusting spittoons. Talk your way out of trouble as a silver-tongued Snake Oiler, plumb the refried mysteries of the cosmos as a wise and subtle Beanslinger, or let your fists do the talking as a fierce Cow Puncher. Explore a vast open world and encounter a colorful cast of characters, some of whom are good, many of whom are bad, and a few of whom are ugly. First of all I need to admit one thing, game is surprisingly complex when it comes to plot and dialogues and side quests and the most important (for me): THIS GAME IS REPLAYABLE AF . We can solve one problem in many diffrent ways, with help of diffrent items, skills or stats depending on what we have and what we need to do. Also in some cases we have a choice to either kill or deal with someone peacefully. We have three main classes of our main customizable character,
each class have uniqe perks and combat skills, on top of that we can use mentioned various items, giving positive or negative stats to our “build”. So we can experiment with diffrent stuff with every single new run. Plot of this game is as I said is complex. West of Loathing is great western parody, game is extremely hilarious with a lot of jokes, gags, and other funny references, game’s world full of goblins, dark magic, hats, undead soldiers, hippies and of course gunslingers sound ridiculous but after all fits very well. Game main plot again give us choice how we should proceed further. Sometimes we need to complete few side quests to go further, I dont want to give any spoilers, but even the most stupid quests can be nessesary to finish the game. Only thing I dont like about side missions are quests and the end of the game, after finishing main plot we dont recive any achievments or valuable awards whatsoever. But this is only small little issue, which of course dont block you from doing that quests.
Gameplay is simple, but good. Fighting model is great and very easy to learn. During our journey we need to face random encounters. Some of them give us medical suppiles, books or useless junk in some we need to talk with goblin, skeleton or bandit, and either fight with them, or leave them alone. In other we can meet much much much stronger enemy which instanly knock us out, making traveling “high risk, high reward’ The game autosaves (and create a backup every 30 minutes) and has no manual save. Hence in some situation to avoid the need of another playthrough, you need to manually backup your current save, then paste it back and load it later to explore the outcome of a different option.
