About The Game
A dark and violent meld of retro and modern action games, inspired by the classic 2.5D first person shooters of the 90s, with elements of modern looter shooters and rogue-lites. Intense and addictive gameplay Tons of enemies are crammed in open-ended levels full of surprises and geysers of blood and treasure. I bought this game after seeing Civvie’s 2 videos on it. It looked like so much fun I had to try it…before I knew it, it was 2am and I had no intention of stopping. Even now, it remains just as enjoyably addictive. This is just as well, because the game goes on forever. Literally, forever. With the Chapter 3 update, New Game + was implemented, and you can play this game with progressively stronger weapons and enemies for as long as you want. Even if you don’t decide to play NG+, you’ve still got at least 40 hours of levels and bossfights- that’s about how long it took me to finish the game for the first time.
But what about the details, Mantha, the DETAILS?! Very well: 3 game-modes, 3 minigames, 3 chapters, featuring 80+ levels, with 80+ weapons, and 50 enemies, officially-speaking. Technically, there are 25x as many levels, if you count all their variations (each level has a set of variations you can encounter. If you die and retry a level, the layout will be different), and for the weapons, there’s…technically, there’s like 1000+. All the different combinations of modifiers (including my favorite, “Random projectile”) make for very, VERY different weapons. For instance, on one of my saves, I have a shotgun that shoots explosive fireballs. Another shotgun I have uses explosive pellets that deal shock damage. Yet another shotgun I had is able to shoot on automatic, has 3 extra shells, and does ice damage, which can freeze enemies solid. So in reality, the amount of different weapons in Nightmare Reaper is innumerable. As you can probably tell, this aspect of the game is my favorite. I I love collecting new, wild, powerful weapons in games, especially when each one feels and sounds satisfying, as they do in Nightmare Reaper.
Speaking of sounds, have you *heard* the soundtrack for this game? Listen to the trailers, watch someone stream the game. The music is fantastic and matches the mood of the dream-based slaughterfest…oh would you look at that, it’s by Andrew Hulshult. That explains it. As for other, non-musical sounds, the weapons all sound gorgeous (the sawed-off’s alt-fire is how every shotgun should sound), to the point that sometimes I start using a weapon not because it has particularly strong modifiers, but because dammit, I really love the way it sounds. You will also enjoy the sounds of the enemies, who each have various idle sounds, alert sounds, pain sounds, and death sounds, all of which make the killing even more satisfying.
