About the Vampires Dawn Franchise Vampires Dawn is a vampire role-playing series created in Germany, which is characterized by a 2D retro pixel look, an open game world, a complex and versatile story, extensive interaction options and a lot of pixel blood. The developers describe the content like this: Contains Pixel-Blood and Gore Contains violent behavior of the game actors Contains mild, non-explicit nudity (semi-hidden female breasts and pixelated artworks) In-game killing of game characters in a variety of ways (e.g. burning, mutilating, severing heads and limbs). Non-player characters can be bitten and turned into vampires. Characters can be captured and tortured. The player makes in-game decisions that determine life and death for other characters.
The story and characters are great, and some twists are simply spectacular. I enjoyed a lot the magic system with runes that can be combined to unlock different spells and to explore combat tacticts. The game world is believable and although there are many funny moments, too, the dark setting is one of a kind and the plot got me hooked from the first moment till the end. Especially the quite long prologue is simply phantastic. There are a few Cons to mention: The game is grindy (i.e. too many fights), a few characters have in my opinion too little “screen time”, and I’d have loved to see the locations of the world more woven into the main story. Because as a looot of exploration is simply optional (but the combat is required to be able to fight stronger enemies in the main story I felt like the side stuff many times prevented me from following more the (phantastic) main plot. Many side quests were quite original and fun (looking at you, vampire race, and the quest for paintings!) but still – the strength of Vampires Dawn is definitiely the characters and the main story, so playing it gave me a little the feeling that a “smaller” setting (not world scale) would allow to make even more of the characters and the story. The player will kill monsters, animals and humane enemies in the course of the game to reach the end of the game. The game includes very frequent depictions of blood splatter due to hits with swords and other weapons. The game’s storyline includes themes of psychological, physical and sexual violence against men and women (but does not endorse or glorify it.
