About The Game
Grab your trench coat, tune your sixth sense and join the Darkside Division as they investigate the outright bizarre, the downright dangerous and the confusing cases of Twin Lakes. Flesh-hungry tentacles, mafian zombies, and the occasional missing sock are no match for The Darkside Detective. Where cultists crawl, where demons dwell, where the occult… occults? *ahem* That’s where you’ll find Detective Francis McQueen, the lead investigator of the criminally underfunded Darkside Division. When evil darkens the doorsteps of Twin Lakes City – hell, even when it just loiters around shop fronts or hangs out in shady alleyways – he’s there, ready to investigate the cases that nobody else will. The COMPLETE SEASON ONE collection of this multi award-winning comedic serial adventure sees Detective McQueen and his sidekick, Officer Patrick Dooley, investigating cases plaguing Twin Lakes and its colorful citizens. Point at everything in sight, click around mysterious and eerie locations, and use your wits (or borrow a friend’s) to lay these cases to rest!
No walking animations. Now, I know this might sound like a bad thing, like a cut corner, but OH MY GOSH I didn’t know how much this would improve the adventure game experience. I’m not constantly waiting for my characters to walk across the screen. I can just click on stuff, and enjoy the game, and enjoy the puzzles. It’s like a HUGE chunk of fluff is gone that I didn’t even know what there because it was always so standard in the genre. No walking means this game is 100% actual interactive and enjoyable content. I felt like I was actually playing the game when I was playing the game, instead of waiting for my character to move around. The puzzles. I love the puzzles in this game. They are made exactly how adventure game puzzles SHOULD be made: obvious in retrospect. I hardly needed to look up any hints or guides, or scratch my head too hard. The characters plainly tell you what needs to happen, and the items add up. Sometimes I admit it is a little simplistic, but it was so refreshing to not feel like I had to try 100 different random item combinations for something to stick. There’s no BS – All the puzzles just make sense. And while I wish that was standard in the genre, it isn’t – even in the classic LucasArts games we all revere so much.
The Darkside Detective Pre-Installed:
This is a fun little point & click adventure. It’s set up as 6 cases plus 3 bonus cases you can unlock in the menu. Each case is it’s own self contained adventure, making for 9 short adventure games. Though they are self-contained, they do make occasional references to things from previous cases but it’s never enough that would interfere with one’s understanding and playing the current adventure. The first 6 base cases must be played in the order they are unlocked with the exception of the first two which are both available on start-up. The bonus cases can be played at anytime. Most of the puzzles are inventory/object interactions and they tend to be pretty logical, with clear objectives as to what you need to do. Each case has at least one sort of mini-game puzzle, all of them are easy. The short self contained cases with logical solutions and easy puzzles make this an excellent choice for more casual gamers. Despite being short adventures the writing is actually pretty good. There’s a lot of humor, including quite a few one-liners that will illicit a chuckle, but it’s definitely not what I would call story rich… maybe story moderate, just enough to keep you engaged but not quite enough to immerse yourself. It seems to draw some inspiration from supernatural cop type shows like the X-files or Grimm, but it also reminds me a lot of Wellington Paranormal, especially with Dooley’s sort of naivety and ignorance of the paranormal situations he’s in.
