Following an event known as “the bloop”, a real-life event involving an ultra-low frequency subsonic vibration, the crew of the submarine Baroness are sent to investigate, and subsequently disappear with only garbled distress calls for clues. Abe, who personally assembled that team, including his own son Clay, feels personally responsible for the situation and takes an armed, one-man submersible to investigate. What he finds and learns from the Baroness’ crew logs defies his understanding of the world and history in ways that might feel very familiar to certain fans like myself. it’s easy to tell how far developer Bomb Shelter Games have come since the exhibition builds. The overall experience is more coherent, with a quality of character writing that made me feel for protagonist Abe and his search for his missing coworkers right away. It also has an audio-visual aesthetic that evokes what my friend term a “different retro feel” from the type seen in many indie games, more closely resembling the DOS era, especially in some of the boss music tracks. The difficulty of the first boss was also tuned way down from the PAX build that featured it, being much more reasonable to defeat even on your first attempt. The second boss I fought was considerably tougher however, handing me my first two deaths.
Depths of Sanity Direct Play:
I do have some small nitpicks. While the sluggishness of your submarine’s acceleration and turning seems to be a deliberate design choice to evoke the feel of maneuvering through the high-pressure oceanic depths; the game recommends the use of a controller and after playing for some hours I tried switching to mouse and keyboard and found that much. much easier, at least to aim with. Deft use of the backdash ability is seemingly easier with controller, so I would strongly recommend experimenting with both setups to find your comfort zone. That being said, your submarine is also very durable, especially when you’ve accrued a few hull upgrades, and it wouldn’t be unreasonable to simply rush past some areas given the abundance of health-and-ammo-replenishing save points and areas with small respawning clownfish that frequently drop health and ammo.
