Sometimes, when there is nobody up to the task, old heroes have to rise from the grave to save the day! Crush your enemies and make good use of their guts – literally, as you can augment Skippy with your foe’s body parts and weapons! Help Skippy, the cubic skeleton, to fight off Squaruman’s endless forces of undead and vicious foes in this rectangular action packed cardboard adventure! Life was peaceful in the Cubold Kingdom until the king’s evil court magician got dumped by the princess. With his heart broken and his rage fueled, he called upon the evil spirits to resurrect the dead and the kingdom’s long forgotten monstrosities. What he doesn’t realize in his fury is that he accidentally summoned an ancient hero as well… Skippy! Travel across the beautifully rendered kingdom of Cubold and take full advantage of your resurrected, skeletal body! Swap out body parts to acquire new abilities during your adventure or pick up a new weapon to vanquish the evil magician’s lackeys. Onwards, Skippy, it’s time to be a hero once more.
Skellboy is an isometric 3D-ish action-adventure with single-layer voxel artwork that gives a family friendly appearance. The game follows a pretty simple story filled with puns and strange events, and is filled with constant but repetitive (perhaps a bit tedious) combat action. The variety in gameplay comes from the fact that the protagonist can swab out body parts in a really cute way with anything that you see enemies drop, and these change stats in addition to general appearance. Cuteness aside, the world is sizeable though you are looping around within the castle and the surrounding grounds, and will offer you a few hours of good clean fun. Completionists among us may wish to contemplate this game for all of its collections within, though I think it’s a bit too much time than I would want to spend. Fortunately at one point about midway through the game you unlock access that gives you quick fast-travel options and free range-of-customization based on what you have unlocked so far, so maybe it’s not so bad to try to gather everything.

The action combat, which is a huge part of the game, could use a bit of improvement in terms of variety. There are 5 weapon types that you can gather, and you can equip with you one of each at any time and switch around easily. However, for the most part, you will be performing the same action on repeat to get rid of enemies, who are fairly standard also. The voxel style sometimes even feels like it interferes with the combat, because X-Y directional movement feels so relatively disproportionate. There’s not a lot to the fights, and only the boss fights feel a bit more unique, though it still boils down to avoiding attacks, landing a few of your own, and waiting for the boss to die and for the story to progress. There are also places in the game where I would have loved to have control over the camera, but that is fixed and will move around on its own. Some places there is a bit of a challenge trying to find your path to move on, even though the answer is staring you right in the face. I think in these situations if I had a bit of camera control, I would have been able to see how to progress that much easier. It was only when I walked back and forth in one section for a while and then finally stepped where I was supposed to when the camera panned on its own to show me the way.
