In a ferocious Arctic storm, distress signals are sent from a mysterious Russian whaler. As leading Coast Guard veteran Tom Hansen, you board to investigate and discover unthinkable horrors lurking beneath the ship’s bloodstained decks. Brave dangerous waters: Rocked by huge breakers, you must steady your nerves and aim to evade a watery grave. Keep your bearings: Battle against increasingly mutated enemies in treacherous, unstable environments. Unleash a torrent of weapons: Create fatal traps and use shotguns, flame throwers, or any object you can find to survive. You’re in an engine room, whirring machinery whirs away on the level below. A shotgun is nearby. But so are several red valves that indicate gas pipes. A corpse being animated by a parasite has just burst out of a floor grating, and several others are approaching with menacing intent.
When out of a body the parasite creatures will start lashing at you with extended limbs, or hoist themselves up onto the ceiling and scuttle about, so they still remain tricky foes. For a game that doesn’t have the calibre or reputation of the likes of Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space its surprising how much this innovated back in the day. Cold Fear gives us a unique setting and they nailed home the atmosphere of being on a rocking ship as the waves pound it over and over. I mean the waves can literally kill you in this game. This is a very action shooter. The scares are minimal but there are some eerie areas and I will admit I got jump scared a few times by enemies jumping out. The game has a very retro feel to it that may not be for some. It still has fixed camera angles, but when you aim down the sights it becomes over the shoulder much like RE4. There is some jank in the game that can cause certain sequences to be tedious and frustrating.
Cold Fear Pre-Installed:
I find the AK would glitch out often and just unload all of its ammo. Ive tried to aim down the sights and the game just goes “nope” sometimes. Usually ending in a loss of life or death. When enemies are up on top of you is when the games jankiness really shines. It can, at times, be a frustrating experience. I recommend having a walkthrough handy because theres no map and youre gonna get lost. Cold Fear came out in 2005 for PC, PS2 and XBOX. It has the probably worst camera you can imagine. Some sort of mix between old PSX Resident Evil camera and dynamic enviroment or over the shoulder camera. Besides of this, the game actually has a lot of atmosphere.
