Kathy Rain: Director’s Cut is a re-imagining of the classic 2016 point-and-click detective mystery set in the ’90s. Kathy is a strong-willed journalism major who must come to terms with her troubled past as she investigates the mysterious death of her recently departed grandfather. Armed with her motorcycle, a pack of cigs, and a notepad, Kathy delves into a local mystery surrounding her hometown that will take her on a harrowing journey of emotional and personal turmoil. As she follows a trail of clues left by her grandfather, questions emerge: What was Joseph Rain really looking for that night all those years ago? Kathy Rain is the protagonist we control who starts an investigation following her grandfather’s passing. The journey consists of 5 chapters (referred to as days) and with Kathy we visit more and more locations and it seems we have more questions than we could have the answers for as we make progress! This is a low-res adventure game reminiscent of the LucasArts era. There are also Wadjet Eye adventure games available on Steam with similar playstyle so if you are familiar with those I believe you’ll love this gem. Fun fact: Dave Gilbert from Wadjet does the voice acting for one NPC. Now, what does the Director’s Cut have to offer? Many things: a reworked (more interesting and longer) end sequence, widescreen support which means we can now enjoy Kathy’s low-res journey without the black borders.

Remember that with Kathy we get to have a travel screen when we leave an area – this allows us to pick the next location. Now, in the new version here we can change the look of Kathy’s motorbike. This has requirements in terms of story progression or doing a specific action. There are also associated ‘cheevos to this. Changing the way we action. The cursor does not have different options such as “look at”. Kathy automatically picks up or actions on objects. Left and right clicks determine this (so we got rid of the wheel or dial) and we move an item from our inventory to the object we want to action it with. In terms of gameplay this rids us of a lot of unnecessary mouse clicks.
