Tyrion Cuthbert Attorney of the Arcane Direct Download
Tyrion Cuthbert: Attorney of the Arcane is a visual novel inspired by the Ace Attorney series. You play as a defense attorney who practices law in a world of fantasy and wizards. You must defend clients accused of various crimes committed using magic and use the rules of magic to prove them innocent. However, the system is corrupt to its core and manipulated by the aristocracy. Will you acquit your innocent clients in light of that? Or will you fall before a corrupt judicial system? the game is a much less polished version of Ace Attorney and it’s not particularly close. There are many errors in the game’s script including missing punctuation, unneeded punctuation, incorrect you’re/your usage, some bad autocorrect usage (our > out)… I will still finish the game and enjoy it because little things like that don’t bother me but I can see how this would be a deal breaker to a lot of players. I hope the devs will release an update fixing some of these admittedly small errors.
The animations/sprites are good, but not great. There are times where a culprit has an ‘iconic’ breakdown animation but it lacks the impact and is underwhelming compared to Ace Attorney. They tend to be more static with less animation. I know it might be unfair to compare this indie game with AA but it is very clearly a homage and benefits from the comparison as well. Villain breakdowns are one of the most iconic parts of the Ace Attorney series and it’s a little disappointed they didn’t put more effort into those moments. The character design is… not the best. I kind of hate how EVERY main character wears black. Most of the time, they have colors besides black, but for the most part, black is used on everyone and blends the characters together. Maybe there is an in lore reason for it, but the characters end up looking too similar, which is rarely a good thing. Compared to Ace Attorney, the characters lack creativity and strong poses.
Tyrion Cuthbert Attorney of the Arcane Pre-Installed:
This game needed an editor. Not for grammar and typos, but for reducing the text. This game has the bad habit of text-based games of having characters give obvious exposition when it’s unneeded. Exposition isn’t bad, it often gets a bad rap from writers who use it poorly, and this is a world with magic, so teaching the rules of the magic system is needed to solve mysteries, but there are points where I feel they could make it feel more natural and leave it up to the player to figure out details of the world without having it be obviously stated. I enjoyed the story just fine but some elements in most of the cases really bugged me. As you play through the game, you’ll notice that there’s a good number of evidence that just goes unused. This makes each investigation and trial not feel as tight as they are in an Ace Attorney game as there’s a bunch of stuff that isn’t even relevant to the case.
