Train your folks, upgrade your town and battle monsters in this minimalist retro-looking strategy RPG! Despite everything being small scale, the game’s mechanics are presented in an easy to understand way and the bite-sized combat is fun and genuinely tense. Unfortunately, the game is on a timer and upgrading your units takes time, so if you wipe your main squad you’re kind of incentivized to reset. Worse, you can’t run from boss fights, you can’t tell what a boss fight is going to be like until you fight it, and bosses tend to be mildly gimmicky. So sometimes you’ll reach a fire immune boss with characters that can only output fire damage, and then that’s a team wipe. If you’re willing to whack your head against the game a few times, you can clear it, and the in-game progression does feel fun. If you like demakes, or even just experimentation with the Dark Souls formula, give this a look. I am really enjoying this game. It would just be Good, but the soundtrack takes it to Great.
It is punishing, and sometimes you have to make in-battle decisions that hang in the balance between a victory that meets your subgoals for a run or effectively losing an entire hour+ playthrough. The moments of tension are the highest drama moments of the game, and whether or not you enjoy that kind of slow run up to a potential game-winner / game-ender decision will mostly determine whether or not you like this game. Enemy power ramps up quickly (those damn boars), and you’ll have to keep track of a lot of abilities, numbers and synergies. For me, this aspect was made surprisingly harder by the fact that units have health to the left and attack to the right, unlike what I’m used to. But despite the limited number of heroes and abilities, the game remains surprisingly complex. There are many possible strategies and synergies, you’ll need to constantly juggle your party around, and the three tribes play sufficiently differently.
Tinyfolks Direct Play:
If you lose your main randomly-generated hero, you lose. If a companion dies, they merely become injured for the next fight. But figths in the second half of the game can easily become unwinnable if you lose too much firepower, and sneaky things like an unlucky Aimless strike or a Counterattack can end your run. Thanksfully, they aren’t long. Especially the ones where they gain constantly attack or shield almost every round and start with already shield and high amount of attack, combined with extra attack for each shield they have. Like honestly wtf…you can’t even decrease the shield so fast how they regain it, because your cards usually are bad af when you reach those enemies.
