An 8-bit RPG modeled after the iconic games of the 1980s. You control a party of adventurers who travel the Realm, talk to NPCs in towns and castles, explore dungeons, and fight monsters as you seek to save the world from a terrible danger. It is a combination of Ultima, Wizardry and Bard’s Tale, with a focus on adventure and discovery. There is no grinding, no level scaling, no hard-set classes, just pure RPG goodness. Want to build a dwarf assassin with a long range shuriken on the left hand and an ice dagger on the right? No problem. A battlemage with insane dodge skills and a nasty storm staff? Go ahead. Want to play with a full party of 6, or just a pair of conjurers? All good. In fact this is one of the few games where you can put your own character in the inn and play with a party that doesn’t even use your character.
maybe 5 years ago, I purchased the complete Ultima series from GOG, and played them from Ultima 4 onwards (I didn’t consider 1-3 as worthy of my time as the Avatar was introduced in 4). Why would I do such a thing? well, I had played bits and pieces of most of them, but never finished them as a teenager (except for ultima 6). It has always been on my bucket list to finish them all. Well I got through 4 to 7, before I ran out of steam, but I loved every minute. Ultima 5 was the best in my opinion. Back in the late 80’s one the best games I played was Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny. I remember being totally lost in the game for weeks. During the game, my walls were covered in hand drawn maps and I kept a notebook near to write down notes.

It was the first real immersive open world game that I experienced. Since that time, I have not been able to find, in any game, the experience that I had with Ultima V, except with Nox Archaist. Combat is no longer an onerous trudge: obvious targets are automatically selected, monster counts are lower, XP and treasure are automatically awarded instead of making you manually rifle through corpses, and if you make an invalid choice it doesn’t cost your turn — you can choose a different action if you accidentally tell a character to attack when no enemies are within range. Inventory is easier to manage. Magic is more useful and the spells that exist are well-suited to the way combat works; there’s even an “automatic” mode that’s (reasonably) safe when your enemy is weaker than you.
