Lichenvale is a first person slasher offering fast-paced melee combat mixed with tactical use of spells and dashing around your enemies developed by ex-Ubisoft employee gone solo dev. Finding yourself trapped in your own nightmares you must battle through nightmarish hordes of monsters representing your innermost fears. Successfully slashing your way out with your trusty longsword will fuel an array of destructive and defensive spells that you can unleash and wreak havoc on your enemies all while dashing or parrying enemy attacks. Skill-based fast-paced melee combat in first person perspective with light and strong attacks for offense and parry and dash for defense Variety of destructive and defensive spells fueled by slashing up your enemies A large selection of progressively stronger enemies, each with their own fighting style Various orbs of power scattered across the nightmare which will permanently strengthen your character Campaign mode with hand-crafted levels each with their own unique aesthetic.
Treasures scattered around levels to further increase your score Hidden collectibles which reveal the connection between enemies and your innermost fears. This is a nice first person slasher reminding me of Hexen and Heretic a bit. Movement feels nice and fast paced, combat offers a combination of light and heavy attacks with a parry & riposte combo if you are skilled enough, and spells have their regular and charged variant. While you have multiple spells you only have a sword as a melee weapon of choice, I would like more melee weapons that would add to combat variety but it is fun anyway with how it is The game looks ok, the atmosphere is great, the music is more ambiental and could use some more up beat tracks, at least for boss fights. The fights can get a bit hectic, thankfully the dash refills fast enough, so that you can get out and get your bearings and assess target priority.

Mechanics are tight and feel pretty good on the whole. Parrying feels great when you pull it off but it seems like some attacks cannot be parried which feels weird. Enemies and bosses are all pretty cool. The werewolf brute is so up in your face you can hardly see what’s happening though. Encounter design was really good in the first half with a nice pacing of introducing new enemies and mixing them with old. In the second half it feels like they just dump random guys at you in large numbers. seem a little funky at times, both giving and receiving damage. Having Melee, Magic and a dash at your disposal does keep things interesting but I personally wanted just a little extra with the spells. I did pitch a Magic Upgrade system to the developer and fingers crossed it does get added as this would really elevate this game into something pretty special. Just the thought of having that extra dynamic in combat puts a smile on my face.
