The horde is here. Pick a hunter and defeat the demon invasion! Horde Hunters takes the popular horde survival genre (aka bullet heaven) that Vampire Survivors started to new directions. It was built with some key ideas in mind from the very beginning; Twin-stick movement Main weapon shoots where you aim while other weapons auto-fire Unique weapon and ability for each character Consumables (instant single-use items) can be picked up and used when needed Gold is used during the run to buy/sell/upgrade your gear Short runs on normal maps (~15min to endgame) with a chance to continue playing beyond Special endless maps (until you die) with leaderboard score rankings Procedurally generated maps that have unique buildings you can interact with Gameplay is active and gives you more control over how your run ends.
This game has a lot going for it. It mixes up the “survivors” formula nicely with active abilities, unique missions on the different levels, and a solid lineup of characters who each play very differently from one another. The developer Antti is very involved with their community and receptive to feedback and suggestions. I have no doubt this game will go far. At time of this review the game is fairly content-light however the developer has made it clear they plan on adding more characters and levels. Even so you can easily have hours of fun with the game in it’s current state. Having many different locations like a blacksmith, a bank to earn interest on banked gold, and rescue events adds a whole new element to this type of game! There is so much unique and interesting new content in this particular VS type game that it makes it feel like a completely new game that I haven’t played before.
Horde Hunters Pre-Installed:
Believe it or not, it’s absolutely not. I played Brotato, Rogue Genesia and Soulstone Survivors along with Vampire Survivors and this game manages to bring so many new things to the table. As someone with over 70 hours in the Demo and 10 in release – If you liked any of the above, you’ll probably like this one. But bear in mind it’s much more active than other bullet hells. At one point, I was so addicted to the game that I couldn’t rest until I topped the global high score – that’s how good it is. I have played more than 50 VS style, Horde Survival games and I can say without a doubt, Horde Hunters is my current favorite in the genre. While the combat and presentation are nothing special, the fantastic systems and randomly spawning events more than make up for it. It is refreshing to see so many new elements and ideas added to the mix.
