The Ascent Direct Install
The Ascent is a solo and co-op Action-shooter RPG, set on Veles, a packed cyberpunk world. Welcome to The Ascent Group arcology, a corporate-run metropolis stretching high into the sky and filled with creatures from all over the galaxy. You play as a worker, enslaved by the company that owns you and everyone else in your district. One day, you are suddenly caught in a vortex of catastrophic events: The Ascent Group shuts down for unknown reasons and the survival of your district is threatened. You must take up arms and embark on a new mission to find out what started it all. You belong to the corporation. Can you survive without it? Play the entire game alone or work together with up to three friends in local or online co-op. Aim low or high, switch weapons and equip lethal gadgets, take cover and use the destructible environments at your advantage and keep adjusting your tactic as you face new enemies. Customize your character with cyberware that suits your playstyle. Allocate new skill points as you level-up and try various augmentations to take down your enemies in new creative ways. Meet new allies and enemies and find loot as you explore the brimming world of The Ascent and its wide range of districts, from the deep slums to the higher luxury spheres. So, to start off with – this game is really very fun! If you’re into twin stick shooters, cyberpunk or action games then you will find plenty to like here. A note before I go on, the review is written after completion of the whole story and around 1/2 of the side quests (says just under 20h of play, but at least a couple of those were dead time with the game running in the background).

Now to get to the nitty gritty. Contrary to what some people seem to think, this is NOT and ARPG and that is a absolutely a positive. You wont be finding loot drops and random stats here, this isn’t Diablo with guns. I cannot quite express how happy I am to see a game in this day and age where there isn’t a bland, number grinding endgame that everything works towards. This game has a campaign, unique weapons and armour, side content (that can be finished off after the credits) and a definitive end with a potential sequel hook. From start to finish of the campaigns 8 multi-part missions, you will be taken through the almost whole map, organically progress with levelling, items and powers until you reach the end with a battle that will use all your skills. For that alone, this game is worthy of praise. The gameplay loop is functionally just combat and getting-to-combat. There is a pretty diverse selection of weapons, but you will ultimately find a couple of guns and powers you like by midway through the game and end up using them while upgrading their stats. This isn’t really an issue, and certain encounters in the game made me rethink my loadout, but largely there will be a comfort zone. Within that comfort zone, the shooting will be great! especially before you find amazing armour (I was getting the best loot near enough to the final level of the story), you will have to tactically position yourself, hipfire AND aim-fire various enemies while utilising various bits of cover.

There a wide spectrum of enemies that won’t let you facetank all the damage so combat sometimes gets frantic but is almost always fun. I personally hated the shield enemies, but I know why they’re there. So a big thumb up for combat and gameplay. A quick mention about the story – its there, it provides good context, and is written and voiced well. Nothing to write home about here. This ain’t Dostoyevskiy or Asimov, but it shouldn’t be. Its a pulpy cyberpunk story that offers a good reason for your character to go and kill random enemies while visiting diverse sci-fi locations. No gripes here. As good as it needs to be, with no pretensions at something its not. Visually the game is stunning! The sounds are good, the music is fine (nothing special, but fits the game and the action). I have literally zero complaints about the aesthetics, other than when you find good armour, it usually doesn’t match and your character ends up looking like an absolute clown. Not a huge deal, but I did end up using less effective items to prevent the goofy looks you could end up having. That this didn’t prevent me from finishing the game is a good thing. So another thumb up for visuals and sound. Overall – this was probably the most fun with a game I’ve had in ages. The fact that I could finish it in roughly 10-15h (including most sidequests) while levelling up a character to have a complete beast by the end is amazing. Low commitment, high return. With how fun the combat was, I will likely replay this game at some point and it lends itself very well to a “simple, but exciting” type of game you can relax on by shooting baddies. I can heartily recommend this with the caveat that people check the state of performance at time of buying (though you can’t go wrong with steam offering refunds if it doesn’t work well). Great game, especially for the price. Hope to see a sequel/expansion.
