MAMIYA – Complete Collection is an atmospheric, dark adventure intertwined with deeply personal themes of trauma. MAMIYA has been on my radar ever since it was announced a few months ago. It’s rare to get a visual novel with an almost all-male cast that isn’t yaoi, so that piqued my interest, as I’m tired of anime girls all the time. But what cemented it was a promise of a dark apocalyptic theme with existentialism at its core. Even with all this, MAMIYA was still a surprise and managed to exceed my expectations with layers upon layers of meaning, while never losing sight of personal human stories. Yet they’re all interconnected through this shared illusion and existential struggles set against the backdrop of the prophesied end of the world. MAMIYA is completely introspective, contemplative and impressionistic; it’s also philosophic, dealing with metaphysical and eschatological themes, but above all is existentialist.

Where the writing especially excels is in the use of ambience to reflect the mood and isolation of characters. There’s a character that hits people to breathe; the other one struggles with gender identity and neglect, the third one meets countless women, not one genuine connection. Even not lacking in anything doesn’t save one from dissatisfaction.
