Born of Bread follows a recipe that adds fun gameplay, sprinkles in endearing characters, and bakes in a great soundtrack, culminating in a tasty piece of gameplay. It’s a delightful adventure that takes inspiration from the classic Paper Mario, set in a fantastic world full of wacky inhabitants and hilarious humor. The plot will take us from the streets of the kingdom to icy dark forests, as we chase after entities from another era that are wreaking havoc in the present day. I’m going to start by mentioning the art, which is presented in a 2.5D that combines a cartoon style for the characters, details in menus and some additions to the environment, with objects and structures in 3D that at first I thought felt kinda weird, but resulted in a truly neat addition to the style of the game. The menus in particular are very charismatic, with doodles for the character cards that fit very well with the general aesthetic, and something that draws attention from the very main menu of the game.
It is worth noting that here, in the settings, there are some colorblind accessibility options that, unfortunately, I have rarely seen in other games, and I really congratulate the devs for facilitating the gameplay to people with visual impairments. My respects! Hand in hand with the visuals goes the music, which left me totally hooked since the moment I turned on the game, and I kept listening to the main song for a while while I was tweaking the options. On our journey, we’ll befriend a cast of charming and unique characters, such as Yagi the martial artist goat, or Dub the little dragon. Dub, in particular, plays a crucial role, as he is in charge of saving our game, and I thought it was a nice touch to integrate this mechanic to a particular NPC. They are all great, and have their own subplots that deepen their personalities. But there are also more secondary and recurring individuals, such as Papa Baker, Loaf’s father, who left me laughing constantly.

It’s worth noting that the villains have their own story alongside ours, and we get to witness some details from their point of view from time to time, which is a very nice addition. The gameplay, on the other hand, is very entertaining. We’ll be able to explore different maps from head to toe, with exploration skills that depend on our companions. Each member of the group has their own ability, such as digging mounds or lighting the way with a flashlight, which generates some variety. However, I must say that opening the menu to constantly switch between characters becomes a bit cumbersome, especially late into the game, and I think a dedicated button to switch between companions would have been really nice (unless there was one and I missed it
