Reficul 666 is an indie open-world horror game with a very different kind of apocalyptic scenario. Follow clues to find your friends and find out what has happened as you explore an open-world town in the darkness of night. All power is out and lighting will be key to survival. Look around the town for more supplies and other items and relics as you venture further into the dark. As an under-development project, I won’t go much over its poor horror elements but the one thing that is truly going for Reficul 666 is its creep factor. The horror and freaky elements of the game don’t really jump out at you, its more of a haunting slow approach, which is enough to creep anyone out. Reficul 666 is a brand new under-development indie, horror-survival title. It brings a lot of time-tested survival horror elements to the table mixed with a couple of new ones.
As you start, you are greeted with a very unusual news broadcast intro, unusual for all the wrong reasons. First of all, the tone of the voice and the expressions are totally wrong. You’re reporting on a haunting and mysterious event, so why are the reporter’s and the expert’s expressions of amusement, like they are reporting a piece of glamour news! Where’s the fear? Where’s the anxiety of not knowing what’s going on? That intro made no sense and on top of that every time you start the game the intro starts playing. Moving past that, the game starts off with a mini-tutorial, which is not skippable. It’s fairly well done, and educates the player about the game’s features and what you can expect from the game. The gameplay consists of a lot of simple yet effective gameplay choices theme/story-wise. Simple WASD slow movement controls, which works pretty well with the theme of the game in the darkness, but I can’t tell the difference between walking and running as both are so slow. You find yourself in a small abandoned town and start following notes left by residents, hoping to figure out what happened and find any survivors.

As the game begins you can hear bizarre noises outside your house from odd bass tones to sinister whispers and you can explore the open-world town as you want but you’ll need to complete the objectives to advance the story whilst avoiding or fighting the threats you encounter. But this is first-person survival horror through-and-through so you’ll need to look after your resources carefully – from your ever-depleting flashlight to your limited pistol ammo – know when to run and when to fight. This time it’s not about viruses in labs or shambling hordes or zombies; as the game’s name implies it’s about the forces of Hell so expect demons and blood. It’s challenging at first, particularly as the game doesn’t like to hold your hand but you can discover effective routes through the town, learn the best places to find the resources you need, and familiarise yourself with enemy patterns which makes me think this could become a speedrunner’s delight.
