This game is much more focused on dungeon-style exploration than the other games. Varied class interactions and multiple viable end-game teams! Items and low-key crafting. Enough to make fun discoveries and to customize your items/playstyle, but not a lot of recipies to memorize! Wyvern horsies! Cool rocks! Spleunking! If you’ve enjoyed any of Rad Codex’s previous games, you’ll almost certainly love this one. It’s not the large world map of Horizon’s Gate with discrete Points of interest to visit, rather it’s several fairly large zones with lots of hidden areas. secret treasures and skulking beasts hide around every corner! The graphics are surprisingly detailed given the lofi aesthetic: characters bounce and wiggle in ways that make even simple animations feel impactful.
The colors do kind of run together, at least until you learn what to pay attention to, but they sell the fact that Graven is not your typical sword-and-sorcery setting. My biggest complaint is that battles themselves can be a bit difficult to “read”: characters will react to attack and can be hard to parse. but since they’re using the same abilities you have access to then you’ll eventually get a better feel for it. Battles sometimes feel a bit stacked against you, but worst case scenario just reload a save and adjust your approach a bit and things get smoother. Even the bosses rarely took more than a couple tries on my first runthrough, and once I’d optimized my characters I generally got through fights, though never so easily that I could afford to make mistakes. As mentioned, you’ll be able to explore and solve puzzles using any of your character’s skills outside of battle. There are also a significant amount of optional places to explore, often revealing more lore, optional boss fights, and spiffy equipment. Battles consist of turn-based combat on a grid, where each character is able to move and act on their turn.
Kingsvein Pre-Installed:
In Kingsvein, turns are ordered more simply than in the past, by having your entire party play its turns in any order, followed by all enemy characters. There’s a strong focus on utilizing terrain effects; for example, damaging an enemy puts blood on their tile, then you could use a move that damages everyone on contiguous blood tiles. Or, light the ground on fire to discourage enemy movement, then use a magic attack that absorbs adjacent fire for more damage output. As in past games, each successful win grants experience to each party member’s equipped primary class, which allows them to unlock up upgrade skills and passive abilities for that class, and to unlock additional classes in a skill-tree style unlock system. Customize your team by mixing and matching 15 different classes, each with upgradeable abilities and equippable passives Use your abilities to explore – freeze rivers with your magic, blast through cave walls, and throw chains to topple statues Ride your loyal steed in and out of combat, and train it to be as fierce as any Knight Set in the realm of Graven, a weird subterranean world of living soil and half-stone Diecast From the maker of the highly-rated Horizon’s Gate, Voidspire Tactics and Alvora Tactics.
