Give me four hours to beat First Cut: Samurai Duel, and I’ll spend the first three dying. This samurai adventure is arcadey in every sense of the word. You could probably beat all eight levels in 20 minutes on one imaginary quarter if you’re good enough, but the whole shtick is that you probably won’t be—at least until you’ve had a chance to practice its lethal take on swordplay. It’s a game so singular in its purpose and so tight in its execution you just kind of get it by looking at it for two seconds. and throws—with all but the throws beholden to a ‘high, mid, or low’ swing angle. The NPCs you fight play within these same constraints, and blocking them is executed by just holding your sword at the same height they’re coming from or intercepting their blow with a swing of your own.
There’s a built in risk-reward by virtue of charging a swing ahead of time—giving you the opportunity for some extra range at the cost of going blockless during that chargeup. You learn almost everything you need to know within a 60 second tutorial and the rest is just clean execution of those principles, and getting to that clean execution is damn fun. The first time you cut down someone before they even draw their sword is a satisfying accomplishment; coupled with a beautifully gratuitous spraying of blood all over you and the background. Any swing you land on your opponent will kill them but the inverse is also true, resulting in melees that favor precision above all else. Parry their attacks with your own, dodge to close the distance, and interrupt them with a well-timed shove. It takes a minute to learn, and a lifetime to master. Levels will demand you string kills together in sequence without dying before moving onto the next screen and collecting your score based letter Grade, and doing that is a hell of a good time.

It adds depth to the game beyond just its enjoyable swordplay: there’s this meta-layer of threat management and crowd control that comes with needing to take on multiple foes at once. and also reveals some of First Cut’s hidden strategies. The one advantage you have against the NPCs in the campaign, aside from your human brain, is weaponizing blood. All that red you’ve accumulated on your sword is a combat-currency you can spend on blinding your opponents with a quick slash that sprays the blood in their face. The same outcome can be achieved by carving up falling enemy bodies which results in gameplay that rewards you for not just treating each foe as a discrete 1v1 duel. Dueling with deadly results – Send heads and limbs flying as blood rains down and stains the characters and environment. Chop your opponent to pieces, or equip a wooden sword instead for a little mercy and possibly a concussion. Duel your friends in local multiplayer, fight custom AI opponents, try to stay alive in Survival mode, or hunt down enemies in the Scenario mode campaign. Play with friends remotely using Steam Remote Play Together. Bonus modes – Laser swords, custom blood, floating weapons, zombies, and more.
