About The Game
Go behind enemy lines to forge your army, conquer Fortresses and dominate Mordor from within. Experience how the award winning Nemesis System creates unique personal stories with every enemy and follower, and confront the full power of the Dark Lord Sauron and his Ringwraiths in this epic new story of Middle-earth. In Middle-earth™: Shadow of War™, nothing will be forgotten. One of the major changes is the removal of the market. This is not relevant if you’ve never played the game before but it is a substantial change for those who have. The in-game market was very controversial for its microtransactions. Although you were never forced to pay for in-game currency, it gave those who did a substantial time benefit. The developer eventually decided to remove the feature stating they felt the unnatural progression caused by the micro transactions would undermine the heart of the game. Furthermore the update includes increased level caps and the ability to keep progressing during the endgame by introducing new abilities as well as new masks, skins, changes to the Nemesis System and various changes to improve the game’s balance.
In the appropriately named Blade of Galadriel expansion you play as the assassin Eltariel, also known as the Blade of Galadriel, who appeared as an NPC in the original game. The story addition, of which the content I don’t want to spoil, picks up after Act 3 and continues to deliver solid gameplay with some new skills, new gear and unique abilities. It also provides closure to the base game’s storyline. The gameplay differs from Talion’s play style but is similar enough to pick up easily and feel at home coming from the base game. One of the new additions is Eltariel’s binding of light to blind her enemies in order to add more damage to her attacks while doing so. However, not being able to dominate orcs makes fights less interesting because the fights’ outcome lack variation. Some legacy skills are carried over from the base game, for example Talion’s Spirit Step. The skill tree works the same way as in the original game, where you are awarded experience points for completing quests. Despite playing in Normal Mode, I’ve had some difficulty during a couple of boss fights where I kept dying, which felt a bit imbalanced compared to the rest of the expansion which is not too difficult. This DLC plays at a different pace than the base game and although it is different in quite some aspects compared to the original game, for example the totally absent Nemesis System, I quite enjoyed the new additions and different kinds of missions.
In this expansion you have to rely on basic weapons and all drops that aren’t money or ammo are beneficial to your gear. This simplified upgrade system compared to the base game can be a relief to people like me who struggled with its complexity in the original game. Another change is the fact you don’t recruit Orcs but Mercenaries instead. And that is about what the change is limited to because its gameplay feels very repetitive to what you have been doing previously all the time. However the expansion has its own unique way of adding pressure and tactics. Since Baranor is a mortal, death has its consequences: although story progression is retained when you meet your maker you will lose all passive upgrades and will have to restart the liberation of outposts from scratch. There’s a strategic element to this because the order in which you conquer the outposts has an influence on the next one and the fact that the upgrades you find also influence Baranor’s combat means death can even help you improve your skills or strategy each time over. Although the story this DLC tries to tell doesn’t have a lot of meat to the bone and Baranor’s gadgets feel like they have been taken right out of Just Cause’s arsenal, the game offers a great challenge in your quest to dethrone the Overlord.
As a newcomer to the series, I’m glad I got into the game with all improvements and expansions already implemented. Even if you’ve played the game before and bailed out early, this complete version might win you over again. Although you may as well just install the free update to enjoy the benefits to the base game. If anything, the Definitive Edition will save you the time from downloading all DLC and updates because it comes shipped with 2 discs that contain all the content. If you have never played the game before this comprehensive edition gives you the best buck for your bang. This game is amazing. The story is amazing and gives us an idea about what was happening in the early days of Sauron’s return. All new characters, epic castle sieges, and forming a massive army out of orcs, not humans, not elves. It shows how life in Mordor is like. It also has amazing graphics, satisfying game-play, and it really makes you feel for the orcs in your army, something that really never has been seen.
