Socket is an indie platform puzzler in the tradition of Unravel, Limbo, and Little Nightmares. If those games are novels, consider Socket a short story that packs an emotional punch. After the death of their only human friend, two tiny androids, Socket and Birdie, must traverse the harsh landscape of Current City, sharing a single failing battery. They must recharge where and when they can, taking on increasingly difficult puzzles along the way. You play as both Socket and Birdie, switching between the two to complete tasks, and combining to conserve battery when you can. The story is also great, though it is not very obviously told. Well, for the most part it is, but the lore is also incredibly important to the story and the lore can be very hidden. The combat is nice and simple, with quite a few advanced techniques. Collecting the different charms and making builds was pretty enjoyable, though it felt a tad limiting at times, but that’s not the fault of the game at all. I’m just used to roguelikes like Slay the Spire, where customisation is so expansive that some runs look like a different game altogether. The customisation in Hollow Knight is still really good and most, if not all, playstyles are represented here with enhancements for them. The story and combat are great, but where the game shines is its artstyle and music.

Be prepared to die a few times while you learn their attack patterns. One thing I liked about the boss design though is they’re mostly 1v1 fights so they feel like epic showdowns against important characters, instead of the usual video game bosses where you spend most of the time fighting a bunch of respawning minions. The combat is satisfying, with several difficulty levels, so it is not too easy or too hard, depending on the level the player chooses, according to his skill. The combat does relies heavily on parrying and dodging, specially against the harder enemies / bosses, giving it a bit of a souls-like taste.
