Spirit Hunter: Death Mark II Video Game The latest installment in the Spirit Hunter series. Spirit Hunter: Death Mark II is a suspense-horror game set at a prestigious academy. When rumors circulate about supernatural occurrences at the famed Konoehara Academy in Tokyo’s H City, it’s up to the head of the Kujou family, also known as the “Spirit Doctor,” to take on the case. The framing of Death Mark II is immediately intriguing. We return to the familiar H City in Tokyo four months after Yashiki and the Mark Bearers came together to battle the curse This time, the story revolves around Konoehara Academy, where gruesome events appear to happen every ten years. With the police unable to explain these occurrences, they label them as freak ‘accidents’ and ‘coincidences’ – but, of course, we know the truth, and rumors of the supernatural only fuel our suspicions. In response to all this, the school’s principal hires good old Yashiki.
Most of which introduce a new spirit for us to hunt and, ideally, put to rest. However, it soon becomes apparent that all of these ghosts are, once again, bound together under the influence of one far more powerful entity. In this case, it’s a monstrous spirit called The Departed – and, for some reason, they’ve set their eyes on you as their ‘dear husband’. Notices that announce people’s deaths, and students who aren’t what they seem. Through your investigation, it appears that a spirit called “The Departed” is the mastermind behind it all, and it looks like it wants something from you… Each of the spirits you encounter has a unique story to tell, often intertwined with that of an urban legend. The game does a brilliant job of emulating that feeling of school ground rumors, as elements from the real spirit’s tragic fate become twisted and their boundaries blur with pre-existing ghost stories, making it all the more tricky for you to investigate and unravel the truth behind each one.

Though it’s not quite as much of a rollercoaster ride as the first game, nor a slow burn like NG, it lies somewhere decidedly in the middle. It’s clear that you’re in danger from the first chapter all the way to the final one; you just don’t know exactly where the main antagonist is hiding. They’re referred to as The Departed, and for some sick reason, the evil spirit keeps referring to Kazuo as “Dear Husband.” What you do know is that there’s a rumor they can take human. form and that somehow they’re mobilizing other spirits to do their bidding, turning the Academy into a hellish nightmare. One of my favorite things about the game is that it brings back many returning characters from the first game, the surviving Mark Bearers. Not all of them, mind you, but a good portion, including the following – the cheerful idol, Ai Kashiwagi; sickly doctor, Shuuji Daimon; occultist high schooler, Moe Watanabe; tech-savvy otaku.
