Savage is a single-player action game that allows players to experience MMORPG-style boss battles. Two characters, the Paladin and the Archer, each fulfill their roles and take on formidable enemies in battle. There are about 30 types of boss battles available, including high-difficulty battles that could be considered endgame content, all of which can be played solo. There’s no need to wait for team members to assemble. You won’t be bothered by the need to communicate with other players. Enjoy battling formidable foes on your own to your heart’s content. The battle progresses in real time, with two characters each fulfilling their roles to defeat the boss.
Typically, the character not controlled by the player is either managed by the CPU or another player, but this game is different. You will control both characters simultaneously in real time. For example, in terms of movement controls, the left stick on the gamepad controls the Paladin, while the right stick controls the Archer, allowing intuitive operation of each character with your left and right hands respectively. (Keyboard and mouse controls are also available.) This control scheme enables a game experience similar to MMORPGs, where the battle progresses from multiple character perspectives simultaneously, even though it’s a single-player game. While awkward, at first, controlling the two characters simultaneously eventually became easier. The auto-attacking range was easy to manage and encounter mechanics were telegraphed well enough that I never felt cheated or like I didn’t have enough time to react. Resource (mana) management felt good for being early game and should get better as more Stats are upgraded.

It was challenging enough to be entertaining but (not yet, at least) so insane to manage that I’ve rage quit. Admittedly, in my limited progress, encounter progression has been smooth. I did go back and fight a few previous bosses to level a bit when I hit a small roadblock, but it was nothing ridiculous. And it was something I expected to happen, based on the type of game it is. As far as things I didn’t quite like, I’m on the fence about gear being acquired by reaching long-form gameplay milestones, instead of dropping from defeated bosses. It feels less rewarding when you defeat a boss and receive nothing to show for it except the next challenge. I have to add that if this game concept does interest you, you should also check out ‘Mini Healer’. It’s a 2D style, single-player game with MMO-style encounters, where you control only the healer of the group. It’s also fun.
