Progress through the story written by Jake Stephen Jackson, cinematic novelist, Non-stop action and captivating gameplay, presented in a noir / sci-fi style in a groundbreaking new way. A huge galaxy and side quests to complete. The main story is epic in scope, and there is so much side content you almost despair of getting it done. It’s also mostly quality stuff, with very little fetchit and pizza delivery. The cut scenes are wonderfully produced, with some of the best mocap I’ve ever seen, and the music is uniformly great. The gameplay is rather different from that of Zero Dawn. The developers seem to want to ensure that Aloy doesn’t get overpowered, so she rarely one-shots anything. Instead, the player needs to chip away at a machine’s health by hitting weak spots and removing components. Some content creators have made freakish builds that do tremendous damage, but such builds aren’t very practical and, in my opinion, go against the spirit of the developers’ design ideas.

On my system (i7 13700k, rtx 4070ti, 32gb ram, 2tb m.2 nvme drive), the game’s performance has been excellent. The port to pc has, in my experience, been trouble free with very rare exceptions involving shader compilations. Just be aware that this is a huge game with stellar production values, and this demands relatively serious hardware. Okay, if you enjoyed Horizon Zero Dawn and liked the combat, story, etc, then I believe Forbidden West is a great buy and you will have a positive experience with this sequel. FW has pretty much the same exact gameplay experience as ZD but adds some much needed quality of life improvements and some fun new mechanics like flying mounts, underwater diving, and new weapons. However, if you haven’t played ZD yet and are curious about the Horizon series, I recommend getting ZD when it’s on sale to see if you enjoy the gameplay and story first, then pick this one up if you liked it.
