The campaign is a bit lackluster in content (it’s basically a huge sandbox and not much else) but as a game you can pick up every now and then to enjoy some mech on mech action it does really well.
Enjoyable campaign that lasts anywhere from 20 to 50 hours depending on how much you grind, then a free sandbox that’s probably another 50 hours if you enjoyed the campaign enough to want more. I like that you can learn better tactics and builds and such and that allows for a lot of repeat play-ability. It would’ve been nice to see some type of crafting method around items. Rather than just only being able to find or buy specific whole items, you could also have a process of upgrading items or crafting them from parts The story offers nice side quests, some mercs make funny remarks and there is just enough gore. The inventory management is a hassle though. I recruited a cheap merc just to bring stuff from places to other places. Weapon modding is fun.
Hexalert Direct Play:
Definitely a fun experience, only limited by the small team and development time. I’ve really enjoyed the systems of working for companies and getting gear based off the missions you complete. A refreshing take on turn-based shooters with RPG elements. The atmosphere. You’re alone and you never see other characters. You receive emails, but as they continue in a linear fashion even if you don’t respond to earlier ones in a storyline at times, it feels a little distant, which I like. It makes the story feel low-stakes, and like you don’t need to be pulled away from painting if you don’t want to be. It is first and foremost about art, and the storyline is a lighthearted addition.
