The Plucky Squire follows the magical adventures of Jot and his friends – storybook characters who discover a three-dimensional world outside the pages of their book. When the malevolent Humgrump realizes he’s the villain of the book – destined to lose his battle against the forces of good for all eternity – he kicks the heroic Jot out of its pages and changes the story forever. Jot must face challenges, unlike anything he’s ever seen if he is to save his friends from Humgrump’s dark forces and restore the book’s happy ending. Jump between 2D and 3D worlds in this charming action-adventure – solving puzzles, boxing badgers, flying with a jetpack, and enjoying many more delightful and surprising mini-challenges as you become the hero of a living storybook. This game is my personal Game of the Year. So many games don’t hold my attention long-term. I might play an hour here and there and move on. This game, with its creativity and unique puzzles; I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next or how the next boss battle was going to work. Space Chimp.
It’s such a cool concept, but it’s a chore to play. The amount of text and constant gamplay interruptions is really messing with me. I really want to like it, but I might need to put it down for some time and get back at a later point. Cause right now, I’m just not having a good time with it. I’m recommending it, cause I know there’s an audience for it and the art style, specifically when you’re in the book is incredible. We need and should support more weird and interesting games like this, it might just not be for me. Outside the book the game adds a little more (but admittedly not as much as I thought) platforming into the mix, and takes a page from Mario odyssey and A Link Between worlds, wall mechanics to meld into the pages of anything hand drawn to progress. I genuinely loved when the game told me I needed to leave the book and find an item, because whatever shape the desk you explore took was exciting.
The Plucky Squire Video-Game:
Jetpacking in a space themed desk or scaling a dinosaurs tail in a Jurassic one, really it’s tough to decide which form of gameplay is the best. After all, of the games 9 chapters, only 5 of them feel like full length levels. The other 4 are actual minutes each which can lead to some really weird pacing problems. If every chapter was an equal length I’d think to call the experience complete. Of course if the only argument I have for the game is in its length (and admittedly a few bugs and lag spikes) then clearly the journey with Jot and friends is worth taking. A wholesome family friendly experience that succeeds at what it set out to do. Current game of the year (but UFO 50 drops tomorrow and Zelda Echoes of Wisdom next week so…we’ll see how long that lasts)
