Dive into the world of this unique fantasy game and take the chance to find out why we play. You will fight tactical battels, all one-of-a-kind, with loads of different creatures to fight and play. All this happens in a welcoming, warm and beautiful world. Choose your creatures and their abilities wisely for victory! There are six classes of creatures. For every battle you need to choose different classes and creatures. If a game with a short but meaningful story, where every battle and character holds a new surprise for you sounds intriguing, A Game´s Tale is the right choice. There are missions where everything clicks and I see a clear way to achieve all the optional objectives, there are others where I realise an hour in that I went the wrong way on my opening round. You can also be a bit vulnerable to death spirals when you do misstep. I sometimes wish some of the earlier missions had say 25% lower numbers to hit, the high numbers can be quite intimidating early on.
That said, when I do hit the existing target, I get a brief moment to feel smarter than I probably am. Mutant Year Zero, and Showgunner there are no random maps. This means that each mission can play a bit like a puzzle, as you try to figure out the optimal play to achieve all optional objectives. As they can all be replayed though, you can also try out different approaches for fun. I should also mention that the game is not easy, even at the default difficulty. I’ve hit a roadblock or two where I had to restart a stage a couple of times. And that can happen pretty early in the game too. But I figured out a solution for every one so far and felt all the more accomplished for it. The devs already said on the forum that they might tweak some things to make them more accessible to more players. So if you are afraid of getting stuck, wait a patch or two. But the game is solvable as it is.
A Game´s Tale Direct Play:
The camera was difficult to manage before I remapped the keybindings to better suit my steam deck/gamepad. That was 90% of the wonkiness though. Like any game, once orientated to the controls and gameplay loop, Everything was smooth sailing. Perhaps even on the easy side. However, as I progressed through the game, the difficulty level did improve. There are 3 characters to play with, all at the same time, and they each play very differently. They come with their own skill trees which are very fun and not too complicated. But you can really see the effect right away and this in my opinion is what makes the game more enjoyable overall. I think maybe if the game overall across the board was a tad more difficult but the equipment costs a tad lower, just so you can bring more with you and feel more like an actual climber.
