A story-driven psychological thriller about the horrific consequences of a loved one’s suicide. After the tragedy of his wife’s suicide, an office worker must process the horrific events surrounding the incident. Experience haunting characterizations of five stages of grief – denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance in this atmospheric 2D psychological thriller. The story focuses on the social issue of suicide and explores relationships with people who are at risk. Gameplay-wise, this game is magnificent. Has some really nice mechanics that feel amazing to use, levitation is fun and very well made, and all the other powers the protagonist unlocks are easy to use and actually very useful compared to some other games where you’ll use one thing once and then never again. The weapons feel good and impactful, although I couldn’t give much expertise on this since I was too big of a fan of the basic pistol and I almost entirely used that, it’s just a matter of preference really.
The navigation through the levels may seem really confusing at first, and sometimes it really is, but as soon as you figure it out, it becomes way easier. The main thing to keep in mind is to make use of signs. You’ll see signs that point toward specific places scattered everywhere, and these make it way easier for you to figure out what’s where and how to get to it. This is hands-down, the best thing of the remake. The dev really nails the feeling of isolation and uncertainty. You walk through a dimly lit corridor. Inhuman howl echoes through the vent above. The sound of bones and metal clashing together grows louder and louder. You turn around immediately and point the plasma cutter toward the sound. Nothing, as if all what you hear before is merely hallucination. Just as you lower your weapon, all of a sudden, a necromorph jumps down from the vent above, greeting you with all of its grotesque mutation. This is probably the oldest trick in the book, and undeniably the most effective one.
Acceptance Direct Play:
The remake takes this trick to a whole new level with improved audio, unsettling sound effects, and overall great settings for a jump scare. What I like about it even more is the fact that this type encounters are randomized. I have to admit, these randomized events caught me off guard a lot of time, and I love every single of them. Each shot can potentially rip off a piece of skin from the necromorph. This feature alone makes every gun really fun to shoot. Two shot from Force Gun can basically remove 80% of skin and tissue. It cracks me up every time to see a skeleton with few dangling tissue walks towards me. The Flame Thrower deals significantly more damage and can actually stagger enemies. The secondary fire launches a napalm that leaves a blazing zone.
