Active Soccer 2023 is an exciting retro arcade football game providing a fast-paced arcade experience, implementing amazing playability and responsive easy-to-learn/hard-to-master controls. Active Soccer 2023 provides a complete career mode, implementing many international leagues, cups and championships. Imagine being the manager of a 5th division English team – you have a budget and your goal is to be promoted to higher divisions, by purchasing players, creating tactics, managing the team and playing real matches! The players look and feel a little clunky and the animations aren’t perfect, but the basics are there and it is definitely more than playable as it is. You’ll have to invest some time in the game by the looks of it if you want to succeed: while shooting, I hit the corner flag more often than the target till now (and I think I injured a couple of fans or three sitting in row Z, sorry buddies), Yet, when you manage to pull off that good shot that hits the net or a good play, maybe with some nicely stringed together passes, it feels definitely rewarding.
Teams are completely unlicensed (well, if I’m really allowed to have a say… Their crests might need some more work done) and none of the players has his real name (who cares?), but the number of leagues featured in the game is overwhelming and kit mixing is a very nice addition even if it’s something that most players seem not to care for anymore. This game is not the finished article, but it is taking shape very nicely. The graphics are excellent, and the choice of views to play with are impressive – the main thing is that you can play up and down the screen like the good old SWOS days. It certainly looks as detailed as I want my football games to be (I don’t need to see close ups of players faces ever five seconds) and editing should be simpler for it.

I love the fact that you can select kits at the start of a match, that has always been a bug-bear of mine. The gampeplay is solid, and there is already a career option which many players have been looking for. From a playability point of view it’s already rating high. Most of the elements gel together nicely, but players aren’t quite as reactive as I would personally like. Shooting can be hit and miss – you can score plenty of goals, but you feel you should be scoring more. It might be because I have started a career with a fifth division team with poor stats, but I’m prone to shooting where my controller was pointing two seconds ago rather than when I think the shot should be taken – this also might be that I need to get used to the controls more. If you make a diagonal run into the box for instance and don’t change direction suddenly then you can pull off a great strike.
