In Agents Of Mayhem , you run a no-holds barred operation against a shadowy super-villain organization known only as LEGION and their mysterious leader, the Morningstar. Agents of Mayhem is not a superhero game. It’s a superantihero game. It is the embodiment of a saturday morning cartoon if it were intended to be viewed with whiskey in your sugar-bombed cereal instead of milk. It’s cheeky, it’s vulgar, and at times, a little unhinged. The overall experience is not particularly complex, and it keeps a pretty steady pace of action. There’s a good amount to like, a little to roll your eyes at, and a few rough spots. The gameplay loop is very polished and easy to approach. The drawback is, it doesn’t take many risks. The dynamic experience of gameplay comes in the character designs and finding your preference. But, I found that when left to my own devices, I did not feel a great desire to challenge myself. I went through most of this open world game avoiding certain characters and certain tasks, in favor of a more controlled, linear gameplay experience. To its credit, AoM delivered in that aspect, but felt like the open world design was not utilized effectively.
In addition to the shortcomings of dynamic gameplay, the intensity didn’t seem to vary all that much. Even with the option to set your own difficulty of yes, 15 different difficulty grades, the difference felt more about your damage and their health than the enemy types or number of them. Once I found a decent sweet spot (10/15), the overall experience of each mission didn’t really waver. The story seemed to hit a solid “7” in the interest level, but when everything is exactly that spicy, none of it really is. There was a bit of a distinct change in tone and pace towards the end of the story While most of the sounds were of a high standard of quality, there were some polishing aspects that drove me to use headphones. In particular, some particular sounds were very harsh or overbearing, so I did not want to cause a disturbance. Some filtering could be done to smooth out that experience.
