Akumi Wars is an excellent indie turn-based RPG by Milton Pool, the developer of Oversoul and former lead artist of Adventure Quest Worlds (where he is better known as Nulgath).
The most important thing to understand about Akumi Wars is that it is, first and foremost, a passion project developed over the better part of a decade by an extraordinarily talented artist and animator. Because of this, Akumi Wars has some of the best visuals and animations that I have ever seen in an indie game, a charming sense of humor, and an engaging combat system with plenty of complex and challenging encounters reminiscent of games like Darkest Dungeon. Together, these factors make Akumi Wars a very enjoyable 12-15 hour (minimum) experience with strong replayability which will leave most players hungry for the planned free future expansions. Having been familiar with Milton Pool’s prior work, I came to the game expecting the art and animation to be excellent and a little risque. I was not disappointed — the animations are smooth and visually stimulating, the character designs are unique, detailed, and a bit horny (as is the developer’s style), and the background design for the zones and nodes really bring the game’s world to life.

But the biggest surprise for me was definitely the strength of the combat system To meet these challenges, players get tons of unique characters (there are over 100 playable characters in game), skills, and runes, with plenty of fun combos to discover. Learning how to beat these challenges and experimenting with combos was one of the biggest draws of the game for me. I also liked the plot, characters, and writing. The main character, Akumi, is a lazy delinquent bounty hunter bumming her way through the Hex Realms, an alternate dimension which combines fantasy and sci-fi tropes. Akumi starts the game completely broke, having spent the last 3 years on vacation after collecting a huge bounty. When her ship and gear are stolen by pirates, Akumi has to recover her gear, round up some friends (and enemies) to adventure with, and begin accepting work from Primal Instinct, the in-universe bounty hunter organization, once again.
