About The Game
ALIENS: FIRETEAM ELITE
Set in the iconic Alien universe, Aliens: Fireteam Elite is a cooperative third-person survival shooter that drops your fireteam of hardened marines into a desperate fight to contain the evolving Xenomorph threat. Face off against waves of terrifying Xenomorph and Weyland-Yutani Synthetic foes alongside two players or AI teammates, as you and your fireteam desperately fight your way through four unique campaigns that introduce new storylines to the Alien universe. Create and customize your own Colonial Marine, choosing from an extensive variety of classes, weapons, gear and perks, battling overwhelming odds in this heart-pounding survival shooter experience.
THE ULTIMATE HUNT:
Play a pivotal role in the epic events that occur 23 years after the original Alien trilogy as a Colonial Marine stationed aboard the UAS Endeavor, battling terrifying Xenomorph threats. Stunning visuals, iconic enemies, realistic environments, powerful weapons, futuristic equipment, and an eerie soundscape, combined with new storylines in a series of replayable campaigns, expand upon the story from the blockbuster films. Face overwhelming odds against over 20 enemy types, including 11 different Xenomorphs along the evolutionary scale from Facehuggers to Praetorians, each designed with their own intelligence to ambush, outsmart and eviscerate vulnerable marines. Utilize cover and master team strategy to survive extraterrestrial threats as they overrun your fireteam from every angle, swarm through doors and vents, scramble across walls and ceilings, and strike from darkness with uncanny ferocity. CUSTOMIZE YOUR FIRETEAM: Choose from five unique classes – Gunner, Demolisher, Technician, Doc and Recon – each with their own special abilities and character perks. Utilize an extensive arsenal of 30+ weapons and 70+ mods/attachments in your effort to eradicate the Alien threat. An innovative Perk Board modifies and improves your abilities, while a unique Challenge Card system alters the approach to each Campaign mission, offering a new experience with every playthrough.
You can choose from 4 starter classes, and each of them come with their own guns and perks. All the weapons feel great (although lack a bit in the sound department), but they are unique and enjoyable to use. The “demolisher” blows things up, while the “technician” can place a turret down. You can also pick from the high-damage-dealing “gunner”, or “Medic” who can place down an area healing device. They all have passive and active abilities that can benefit them personally, as well as their squad. The main gameplay is quite fun. In left 4 dead-esque campaign levels, you will mostly be mowing down hordes of Xenomorphs, with sprinkled in “special” types like a spitter, pouncer, or burster. Basic enemies bleed acidic blood, and can swarm you easily. You barely have time to breathe, even in down-time, and it feels oppressive, in a great way. I was also genuinely surprised how much attention the story and lore got. There’s a lot of it to enjoy in the hub world in between missions, for people who are looking for that kind of thing, but even levels have some of this stuff sprinkled in.
On higher difficulties, the game can make for some very close calls and memorable moments, with friendly fire enabled, and tougher enemies. Exploration is lightly rewarded, as you can find one hidden cache per mission, which will give you some permanent cosmetics, as well as consumable ordinance or tools to use within the current level. Once you beat a mission, you will earn xp for the class and weapons you used. Progression feels very rewarding in this game, as you unlock new stuff to play with throughout, but also increase the stats of your perks, in quite an interesting upgrade system. You can even mix and match upgrades from different classes, which incentivises playing different classes. One another interesting mechanic, is the use of challenge cards, to either give yourself an upper hand in a mission, like increasing your stagger chance on enemies, or doubling your health. However, if you opt to use a negative effect card like slower reload times, or more frequent enemies, you will get xp and credit boosts. Just another fun way to increase replayability.
I honestly don’t have any real gripes with the game, apart from a very questionable choice of having all enemies highlighted when you ADS, on easy and normal difficulty. (You can turn it off in options, which I did immediately). The game isn’t the price of a full AAA game, although it feels quite polished, with some decent graphics, fun customization and really epic music. There are quite a few missions to play through. My squad hasn’t done them all yet, so I’ll be sure to update the review when I do.
