I’ve only played a little bit so far but I love it already. (Beaten Act 2 and completed the demo.) This game is turn-based but it’s FAST. Fast combat, fast UI, fast dialogue. It gets to the point. It knows what you’re here for. It’s also really funny for my battle-hardened rebel with a thick bushy mustache to have a dialogue box that’s just “>:(“. The writing, for how concise it is, has a lot of humor packed into it just by how it phrases things. Man I loved this game. Totally invested in the story, loved the character design and how each one had their own unique feel and play-style, great balance between overworld exploration and combat. I feel like it sort of ended too soon in terms of story and combat depth, but I can’t complain too much, great time. My favorite thing about Arco is how blisteringly fast its combat is compared to most TBS/tactics games or JRPGs. I get the impression the developers respect my time, not only in that the game progresses quickly, BUT ALSO because it’s so fast, Arco can ratchet up the challenge for free (and it does so).
Arco Direct Play:
Failing a mission in FFT or Battle for Wesnoth can be exhausting or frustrating. But ARCO expects you to die like Dark Souls and Hollow Knight expect you to die. Fights are short and brutal, and you can retry them instantly without condescension. If that sounds scary, well, it also seems the greatest difficulties in this game are optional, self-imposed. You’re given ample opportunity to prepare yourself for mandatory story fights, via the RPG mechanics in the game. This game’s strength is in its gameplay, creating a unique mix of mechanics that’s not quite RTS and not quite strategy. This is great! It encourages thoughtful planning with a tense environment. The story is also very engaging, setting serious stakes and consequences early and committing to having many more throughout. You take both together and you get something really special. You might get an item that makes a boss a cakewalk, but are you willing to make the sacrifices to get it? Can you live with the guilt? Very good stuff.
