And that’s not all, because fan-favorite co-op mode makes its return as well. The story campaign – which can be played solo or in two-player co-op – is a straightforward, linear shooter that alternates between about 75% all-out action in which you joyfully reduce throngs of zombies to extremely chunky soup before they do the same to you, and 25% slower-but-still-tense exploration and puzzle solving where you’re collecting weapon after weapon to more effectively puree zombies on your next encounter.
It’s well paced, though that can only go so far when you’re talking about a campaign that lasts for more than 15 hours. with headshot kills this satisfying, it never really gets dull even if it does run dry of surprises. It genuinely is a spectacular explosion of gore, accompanied by one of the splorchiest sound effects to ever do it, often resulting in a zombie going flying in a cartoonish way. That’s when the exaggerated rag doll physics aren’t glitching hilariously and sending them doing amazing cartwheels, which they are prone to doing. When I have my aim dialed in and knock out five or six head shots without reloading, Expect manual reloading, climbing, dual-wielding, and a highly interactive environment. It’s all just pushed up a notch thanks to the impressively large hordes of zombies (or Freds, as our plucky hero affectionately coins them, bound by the standard video game agreement to never, ever, ever call them zombies), intense chase sequences and a wealth of stunning set pieces that never failed at making me crack a smile. Some universal VR frustrations do show themselves here.

You’ll most likely need to fiddle with your utility belt’s positioning, and the busy inventory system is at odds with the breakneck pacing of Arizona Sunshine 2’s combat. But these small irritations don’t take much away from the excellent experience Vertigo Games has crafted here. It’s all brought together by how you’ll manually handle each gun in the game. As mentioned, reloading is tactile and involved; you’ll need to eject the clip, reach to your utility belt for a fresh one, load it in and cock the weapon all by hand. When met with a bullet, their heads pop like watermelons with the sound design to match. Dealing with faster zombies? You can shoot out their legs as an effective means of crowd control. If you’re careful, you’re also more than a match for larger hordes; a well-placed grenade can immediately blast them into orbit and the flamethrower is an efficient method of sowing fiery chaos in their ranks.
