I could pick apart a few flaws: The early game feels annoyingly on rails. The final boss fight is easily the least interesting in the game. There’s no field of view setting, which means on PC you feel like you’re looking at the world through a scuba mask. The protagonist doesn’t have much in the way of a personality. But these and other minor irritations only stand out because the rest of the game does so much so well. Visuals. A superficial point, but the environments here are lush, diverse, and spooky as hell. Character designs are convincing and varied, from creepy murder dolls to high-tech agents to a mystical crone to blood-smeared vampires to a comfortably dressed housewife, and much more. The general presentation here is masterful.

Pacing is great here as well. My “thorough but not obsessively completionist” playthrough lasted a little over 12 hours. I felt like I always had things to do and was always in sight of the next major story beat, with a few side activities and treasures to search for when I wanted to take a break from driving the main story. Things never dragged. Very much worth your time, and if you keep your eyes open and have some patience you can get it on sale for $20 like I did. If the game looks at all interesting to you I urge you to make time for it. The gameplay as well as the loot system and the merchant are quite innovative and very pleasant and really makes us want to loot all the zones.
