Black Skylands is the first steampunk experience that combines elements of open world, sandbox, top-down shooter, and adventure games. You’ll play as Eva, a proud, brave young woman, who wants revenge on the cold-blooded outlaws who destroyed everything she held dear. Become the captain of an airship and explore the world of the skies, gather resources and build powerful weapons, uncover ancient secrets and fight beneath your ship’s sails. However, keep in mind that outlaws are not the only threat you’ll encounter. In the deepest depths of the dark skies, something far more dangerous lurks… Fight in the skies and on land. Combine aerial and ground fighting tactics by using dozens of upgradeable weapons from your arsenal Gather resources and upgrade your flying base. Take on tons of different challenges, destroy hordes of enemies, and get unique rewards Using your grappling hook feels great, ship combat feels great, on-island combat feels great, the aesthetic of the game is beautiful, ship/equipment customization is intuitive and lets you play your way, and exploration is never boring. I sank about 24 hours into the game, completing the story and collecting all the things I could (with exception of a few of the late game weapons and their mods.
The gameplay’s fine, but the tone is all over the place, like the team couldn’t decide if they wanted to make a whimsical Stardew Valley, or a gritty Hotline Miami, I like both flavours, but it’s strange mix that I don’t think Black Skylands pulls off. It’s so distracting that even though the game is fine, and I’m recommending it, I’m not going to talk about anything else here. The main character, Eva, seems to be the biggest victim of this tonal whiplash. When the game starts, she appears like she’s going to be a feisty, adventurous young sky captain, but it very quickly turns out she’s a blank, emotionless killing machine. Maybe that’s part of the story they’re trying to tell with her character, that she’s so traumatised by the fighting that she’s just dead inside, but there’s zero payoff to it, you’re just stuck with this vapid protagonist for the rest of the game.

I was giving it a fair shot. Is it worth the price? depends on the person. For me it is and I plan on going back for a full playthrough. I went through a good chunk of the game and I like steampunk and ship combat as it reminds me of old flash games I grew up with. Story was decent and I really enjoy the combat. the number one irritating aspect for me is the grotesque resource grind when you reach late game (or possibly end game) when going for all that wonderful end game gear that you are SO desperately going to want to get so that you can FINALLY do some proper damage to literally EVERYTHING. And let’s not get started on unlocking various weapon mods… the mod boxes are literal RNG for giving you something good or something worthless.
