About The Game
One day he decided to take a vacation abroad. He arrives at a small, quiet coastal town where tourists are sparse and everybody knows each other. It’s only when he notices people are going missing and all the signs point to a dark, mysterious island out to sea that he decides to team up with local journalist Michelle and terrified-yet-adventure-seeking waiter Glenn to go and investigate. What secrets does the island hold? What are the locals hiding? And what’s causing those blood-curdling screams that seem to be coming from that mysterious island in the dead of night? Calm Waters is a 2D classic point and click thriller/mystery/horror influenced by the likes of Lost and Twin Peaks. Cool premise, does a great job of building suspense, and overall worth the cost and time to play. I would recommend it, so kindly forgive that the following list of criticism exceeds my compliments. It lacks DEPTH. The few characters involved are very undeveloped, the dialogue options also seem irrelevant. The story’s resolution is disappointing and shallow, and more than once, reaching dead-ends requires pixel-hunting or, more annoyingly, the repitition of a repeated, previously unsucessful action several times, without indication of a changed response, before you can progress with the game.
Overall, the technical aspects of the game deliver all that is expected, but without a very specific walkthrough you may get annoyed at the tedium of the very specific actions required to progress, often with an arbitrary time limit. This list sounds great. Until you actually play it. The game is Roguelike but it doesn’t feel like one until the very end, there is nothing to “build” you take every single passive you can get. The actives are limited to a single one in the start and gets expanded to two later, however, these feel like some ultimate ability with their super long cool downs. There is also a slot for the actives AND passives, these can be anything from a 1 time use ability or a super strong passive. It just doesn’t make sense why these aren’t clearly separated, if you wanted to keep some of the stronger 1 time use abilities like triple gem then just drop them or put some heavy drawback on them (eg. Raging Bull). Regarding the story,

it is pretty standard. Follows a family whose mom and dad have been very busy. A clear cut good versus bad. The game tries to introduce some more background to the villains but it falls short. Side story content are optional and cute. Not all characters are presented with the same effort, doesn’t make sense why someone can just spit out fireballs ?? But cool I guess. I played on hard – so some experiences may vary Game play and enemy variety – This is BY FAR the weakest point in the game. Let’s start with game play, some characters are way too good for AOE and others are way too good for single target. I like to believe this is because they want us players to mix it up and play all the characters. However, since it is Roguelike it is all about killing them before they kill you, and fortunately there are a couple of characters that can spit out massive damage while still being VERY safe to play. These are both the kiddos – the assassin and the fire mage. All the other characters are just not that good and this is because of enemy variety.
