I dedicated myself to work 5 minutes a day no matter what, and built the game piece by piece, not really knowing where I was going or how it would all end Caves of Lore is a turn-based, pixel-art, fantasy CRPG that combines elements of environmental exploration and character interaction with tactical, grid-based combat. Fun and weird adventures await as you progress through a world full of monsters and humor. Hidden secrets and strange powers abound, allowing for a highly customizable party. Vast amounts of loot and treasure constantly increase your power, while dialogue, books and lore are waiting for those who want to be drawn into the world further. Dark themes and ancient horrors don’t keep this game from remaining upbeat and funny, with a story that unfolds in unexpected ways. Tactical combat, endless magical item combos, and a vast array of spells, abilities and traits make for great replay value. 6 character capacity party, 65+ spells, 65+ abilities, 65+ traits, 50+ monsters, 40+ NPCs , 30+ quests, and 20+ areas to explore.
Hundreds of items and tens of thousands of enchantment combinations make for all manner of powerful items. Right after clicking the new game button, players are met with the character creation screen. First, you put the available points into various attributes. This is the first, and most likely the most major choice you will make in the game. Attributes encompass various aspects of the gameplay, from spells you can cast or equipment you will or will not be able to equip. At this point, the player must decide how their character will play the rest of the game, as attributes are mostly static for the rest of the game. They can change by very rare secrets you can find in the game or by enchanted items, but they won’t change much. So be careful at this stage. Caves of Lore is a turn-based RPG that focuses on exploration and discoveries. This game appeared out of nowhere, and I was intrigued by the look of it, so let’s check it out.

After that, you pick a few traits, which are various passive bonuses like giving extra damage on certain weapon or spell types. Next is the skill system, which Caves of Lore features a hybrid of learn-by-doing and skill points. If you attack an enemy with a one-handed weapon, your skill with that weapon category will increase, but you also receive skill points every level up that can be used to further your expertise or be invested in other skills. What I like about this system is you can easily branch out to other specializations rather than being stuck to one playstyle, especially with non-combat skills like lockpicking. It’s a good balance between freedom and constraints so your character doesn’t become a god that can do everything. Right after creating the main character, you will find yourself stuck inside a cave, and this brief section serves as a tutorial on combat and exploration. You will also find your first of many characters that will accompany you on this journey.
