So many dumb reviews of this game here. This is a perfectly acceptable $20 remaster. Portions of the game’s source code and many of its assets have been long lost, so Square did what it could. A remaster is an archival effort, not a remake. It’s the game, as you played it on the PS1, with a few updated backgrounds, textures, and bonus tracks + Radical Dreamers, which is honestly worth at least half the cost of entry on its own if you’re not from Japan. For those complaining or concerned about the frame rate, I mean, that’s how the game looks. It’s a PS1 game, the frame rate was like 15-24 fps back then and since this is just the original game it will be bad now.
The janky animations are there too, just as you remember. This was a late-cycle PS1 game and the developers probably pushed the system too far. The result is what you see here, bad FPS in fully rendered 3D environments. I just don’t understand the complaints. It’s like complaining that Super Mario Bros doesn’t have widescreen support on the Switch or whatever. This isn’t a remake, the problems you’re experiencing are just the problems the game has always had. People calling this port “lazy” don’t know what that means — every background and texture have been upscaled and often painstakingly manually redrawn (because again, the original assets no longer exist), Radical Dreamers has a complete localization that has never existed before. This is a remaster and a port. It’s not a remake. It’s just not! Some actual annoyances: I wish the original OST was available. I wish you could change between old and new graphics without exiting the game (though there are legit technical reasons for this, it’s still a little sad). I wish they’d found a way to speed up the transitions a bit.
