Perhaps your inheritors will complete the Rite of the Crucible Soul. Perhaps they’ll find peace in a pleasing career. Perhaps they’ll bring the Dawn. One of my favorite games I’ve ever played. It has its issues, like verb placement being infuriating and the board just being a little bit too small, and a few bugs that require me to reload but i really do enjoy this game with my whole heart. the game really replicates what its like actually researching the occult, reading weird books to find a little scrap of something interesting, until it snowballs into one of the coolest things you’ve ever seen. i’ve waited until i got my first victory to write this, which took me AGES, until i figured out the mechanics to survive, which i loved.
Probably a large turn off for many people in this game is the initial difficult curve. You will die, a lot. You will have no idea what to do. There is a lot of trial and error involved, and you will have to pay attention to what cards can go into what verbs, and the text that goes with these cards. The lore and storybuilding in this game is paramount to playing the game itself. To reiterate, trial and error, people, your first hours of this game will be frustrating and difficult, but everytime you make progress, it feels like you really are carving this occult path through the underworld. It’s glorious. The art is crisp, lo-fi, and wonderful. The music is entrancing, although I’ve heard it all so much now I often put on my own music or a podcast. Recently, the developers have been rebuilding the codebase in the game and tweaking some of the mechanics. Right now, I find card placement more of a pain, but it makes sense, I’ve played over a hundred hours in the old version, I think it will just take adjustment. They’re rebuilding the codebase so they can use it for their next game, which looks even cooler than this one!
