About The Game
Recruit and gear up a squad of elite mercenaries with hundreds of weapons and accessory items. Take your squad to face hordes of zombies at different 3D environments where the world is seen through the cards. are turn-based. Your squad against „them“ while „them“ are zombies. The battlefield looks like cardboard with one lane on each side. On top of the screen, you can see all cards the territory holds (zombies, events, and special objects where you can find cards to use within the battle). Each turn a new card will be played. Your soldiers get placed first, then the first turn starts. Each turn one or more cards of the territories deck will be played. You can also play cards for AP. At the start of a turn, you can choose one of three random cards in your hands. They will let you search the area, search for medical supplies, etc. If you find something, you will get a card in your hand. For the mission’s duration, unplayed cards will go into your deck. In later battles, you will draw them again.
Battles. They are fun, fast-paced, addictive, and something new. Instead of just battling enemies, cards can be objects too and you can find new stuff. The mechanic of getting new cards every turn also adds something new to the genre. It’s strategic and the difficulty feels right though I did not play a whole lot since my save game got lost. Progression. Thanks to being able to unlock plenty of stuff, upgrade cards, get new soldiers, and level them up, it’s engaging. The cinematics, the music, the story, and the visuals create a scary atmosphere which adds a lot to the overall experience. I especially enjoy the cinematics when killing a zombie. My save game got lost. I had an early build before the EA release and while updating the game after EA my save game was gone. I just hope that doesn’t happen too often after future updates.
The camp feels a bit superficial with „just“ five options and one of them is just looking at your survivors. I feel like there is a lot of potential hidden to make more out of it though personally, I don’t have a good idea that fits the game right now. Take the best parts of a collectible card game like Slay The Spire, mix it with the squad gear and tactics of something like X-Com or Jagged Alliance, bake in some 3D action and you’ll get a decent idea of what Dead Grid has to offer. Building up your mercs, each with their own personality, and tackling the zombie apocalypse has NEVER looked or played like this.
