Don’t ask, just parry！deflect is the core combat mechanic in ‘Deviator’ allowing you to turn the enemy’s fierce attacks into nothingness with precise timing. Practice diligently, my friends; if you’re too slow, you’ll be defeated. You wouldn’t want to take a hit from an enemy, after all. Every battle is a tense and thrilling game of wits. When attacks and deflect succeed, the character will continuously build up momentum. Once it surpasses the threshold, you can enter a powerful enhanced state. In this state, the character gains multiple benefits, with improved damage and game feel. While getting beaten up by monsters may look pitiful, the enhanced state truly looks cool. This fantastical world is constructed with vivid 2D hand-drawn artistry. From enemies to buildings, and the diverse styles of different regions, everything leaves a deep impression. The lush green forests, the shadowy mechanical city, the treacherous and icy canyons… But don’t get too lost in the scenery, danger lurks around every corner.
Watch your step! Danger lurks everywhere in this world. The game thoughtfully provides numerous challenging levels for you to showcase your skills. Of course, experiencing failure can be just as exhilarating. Get ready to ‘suffer’ The developers were keeping Hollow Knight in their minds for sure when making this, likely for its popularity. Hollow Knight and Deviator are kind of similar in price and style. It’s cool to see a new 2D game like Hollow Knight, especially since the second Hollow Knight game is taking as long as it’s taking Bethesda to come out with the next Skyrim game. Almost half, if not more, of my parries’ counter attacks on bosses are wasted. They just simply don’t reach. Either make the counter attack after a successful parry reach a longer distance, or give the player a grace period after a successful parry to initiate the counter attack when the character is within reach of the enemy. I kept parrying the Knight boss for few minutes without being able to hit him once with a counter attack.
DEVIATOR Direct Play:
Each biome looked cool at start, then it gets old very fast. There aren’t enough land marks, distinguished designs, or elite enemies in the middle of the biomes, which leads to exploration getting stale quick. Some performance issues: Soundtracks sometimes just stops working. While moving in some areas (and this is very noticeable at the Knight boss area) the screen will jitter while the camera is moving. Deviator is clearly inspired by Hollow Knight, borrowing it’s art style and a lot of gameplay aspects from HK which fit really well. In it’s current early access state it’s pretty fun with enough content to enjoy an initial playthrough. I’m excited to see what Deviator will look like after the full release and I’ll for sure be back to see what the rest of the game has to offer. this game is definitely trying to be silksong before silksong comes out, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing; This game has a cool charge up mechanic, ultra customizable runes (charms) which you can dedicate more slots to to make them more powerful, and a parry/counter system reminiscent of nine sols.
