Stunning 3D Visuals: DOOM 3, Resurrection of Evil and the all-new ‘Lost Mission’ have all been optimized in stereoscopic 3D (on supported hardware), further immersing the player in the demonic world of this terrifying horror masterpiece. The Lost Mission:
DOOM 3 BFG Edition includes an all-new chapter in the DOOM 3 experience – ‘The Lost Mission’, featuring eight heart-pounding single player levels and a completely new storyline that will have players once again on the edge of their seats. The Ultimate Collection: As a special bonus, DOOM 3 BFG Edition will also include the original DOOM and DOOM II games, making it the definitive collection of the revolutionary games developed by id Software, the studio that pioneered the first-person shooter genre. Apparently everyone hates DOOM 3 now, and of the minority of DOOM fans that like DOOM 3, many hate the BFG edition because of changes made with the flashlight mechanics and other graphical changes. Yes DOOM 3 was controversial among the fanbase at launch, yes the gameplay feels dated and at times awkward, yet I still find it enjoyable to revisit DOOM 3 and the BFG edition is a nice way for me to do it. Personally, DOOM 3 to date is still one of the scariest games I ever played, so I like the new flashlight system. Even with the flashlight on the entire time I still feel crippling anxiety and fear.
Let me be clear, this game is a play during the daytime game for me, even at 30 years of age. It is hard to explain but when I play this game it feels like I am witnessing something truly evil. I actually feel doom. The UAC in DOOM 3 is the most dreadfully unsettling and oppressive video game environments I have experienced to date. Even the brief period before the demonic invasion, the place just seems eerily off and something in the vein of an uncanny valley or liminal space response is generated in the back of my mind as I traverse the corridors of Mars City. The feeling is crushing, depressing, and lonely. The sound effects in this game still amaze and frighten me, and playing with headphones on takes it to a whole other level. The whispers that occasionally happen still creep me out.
