Dordogne is a heartwarming linear narrative adventure game with strikingly vibrant watercolour art. It is a story about remembering forgotten childhood memories and recognising their importance going into adulthood. It is a moving short story told through impressive visual displays, but one that will only last a few hours. You play as Mimi in both the past and present. Present Mimi is an adult and is having difficulties with her father. He does not acknowledge her desire to remember more about her grandmother, Nora. The topic is always contentious when it is brought up in conversation, but no one in her family will answer why she has large portions of memory missing. Now that Nora has recently passed away, she is more determined than ever to finally have her questions answered. Beginning her adventure, Mimi ventures out to Nora’s old house and her memories start flooding back. She recalls being there, and all of the fun she had with her grandmother. Why were these precious recollections hidden from her? What happened, and where did it all go wrong?
Dordogne Direct Play:
The story is generally very uplifting, but the darker undertones are still present, they just do not take centre stage. Collect letters to find out more, carefully reading between the lines in dialogue with Nora. Now that Mimi is analysing her memories through an adult perspective, it is easier to spot the strain in Nora’s voice when certain topics are brought up, or the way specific topics are quickly brushed off or changed. I enjoyed this angle, as it kept the game purposefully light-hearted, but the full context is there for players who wish to delve deeper into the narrative, especially with the character Renaud and his indirectly explained past. The focus is on Nora and her relationship with Mimi, and how this shaped her as an adult. There is an abundance of self-reflection that Mimi does, on her emotions and how she felt during specific moments or days. Whilst there is no villain or looming threat in the story, the game fantastically submerses players into its vibrant watercolour wonderland, and into the life of Mimi.
